How Does Microneedling Work?

Microneedling is one of the most popular aesthetic treatments, but if you’re new to it, you may wonder how tiny needles play a role in anti-aging. Read on as we explain how microneedling works and what types we offer.

Microneedling isn’t new. Ancient cultures used sharp instruments to help with scars, and the technology has continued to evolve since the introduction of modern microneedling in the 1990s.

Regardless, it all works on the same basic principle: Tiny needles create micro-injuries to restore and repair your skin.

But how exactly does that help smooth away wrinkles, reduce scars, and rejuvenate your skin? That’s what our team of experts at RefineU Med Spa in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, is here to explain. Read on as we discuss how microneedling works.

What’s microneedling?

Microneedling uses fine, sterile needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the dermis. The dermis is the middle layer of skin, containing fibroblasts that produce collagen.

The tiny punctures are nearly invisible, but they signal your body to start the natural wound-healing process. This process activates growth factors and the fibroblasts that produce more collagen and elastin

Collagen and elastin are proteins that give skin strength and elasticity, keeping it looking youthful.

That’s the secret to how microneedling works; it stimulates your body to produce more collagen. It’s why you may see microneedling referred to as collagen induction therapy.

How the process works

During your microneedling treatment, we gently move a device with fine needles across the surface of your skin. Most people describe the feeling as a light scratching sensation. As your skin heals, it begins to repair itself and can contribute to:

  • Reduced appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Improved skin tone and texture
  • Fading of acne scars and other marks
  • A brighter, healthier glow

Because microneedling relies on your body’s repair system, results appear gradually and improve over time.

How does Morpheus8 work?

We offer two types of microneedling, traditional and Morpheus8. Morpheus8 operates similarly to traditional microneedling. The difference: Morpheus8 includes radiofrequency (RF) energy.

While the microneedles stimulate collagen production in your dermis, the RF energy penetrates deeper layers of your skin to tighten tissue from within. This dual approach makes Morpheus8 ideal for people seeking both collagen boosting and noticeable skin tightening.

What to expect from your microneedling session

We make microneedling sessions straightforward. Here’s what you can expect from microneedling at RefineU Med Spa:

Consultation

During this visit, we discuss your skin goals, review your medical history, and determine whether traditional microneedling or Morpheus8 is the best option for you.

Setup

Once it’s time for your treatment, we make sure that you’re comfortable. We gently cleanse the treatment area to remove any makeup, sunscreen, or surface oils.

While the idea of tiny needles may not seem like a comfortable treatment, microneedling is painless. We apply a topical numbing cream to your skin.

The microneedling process

Using either a traditional microneedling device or Morpheus8, we create controlled micro-injuries on the surface of your skin. With Morpheus8, we also deliver gentle radiofrequency energy to deeper layers of your skin.

Aftercare

Following treatment, your skin may appear pink or slightly swollen — similar to a mild sunburn. That usually subsides within a couple of days. We provide specific aftercare instructions, such as avoiding direct sun exposure and using soothing, hydrating skin care products.
